Why Learn Navigation?

GPS fails: dead batteries, no signal, broken device. Map and compass always work.

Compass Basics

  1. Baseplate: Transparent body
  2. Rotating bezel: Degree markings
  3. Magnetic needle: Red points north
  4. Direction of travel: Where you point

Taking a Bearing

  1. Point direction arrow at destination
  2. Rotate bezel until north aligns with magnetic north
  3. Read bearing at index line
  4. Hold compass flat, turn until needle matches
  5. Walk in direction of travel arrow

Natural Navigation

  • Sun rises east, sets west
  • Moss often on north side (UK)
  • Stars: North Star (Polaris)
  • Church doors face west
